Is School Computerization a Positive Phenomenon?

Most elementary schools nowadays are proud of their computerization processes and some go as far as creating interactive computerized learning environments for their pupils. Computerization is very much in fashion, but experts and psychologists disagree about the advantages of transforming the classroom into an interactive environment in which every child works in front of a computer screen. In this article we will explore the possible disadvantages of computerization for the very young pupil.

A New Visual Language

Most experts will agree that computerization has created a new visual language, one that can be easily demonstrated by taking a look at the use of touch screen technology. The fact that even very young children can operate computerized systems is an indication of efficiency, but it can also be problematic. Young children that are aged between four and nine develop their communication skills. Learning to read and write is a process that can actually come in conflict with the new visual language that computerization offers.
